Make the most of your food box

When it comes to making the most of your food box from Swindon Food Collective, we've got some top tips for you.

The first thing to do is unpack your bags and work out which things go together to make meals, so you don’t have odd tins left that don’t work with anything else. Here are some of our food box tips:

  • Tomato based cooking sauces can be mixed with tuna, chopped hot dog sausages, kidney beans or chickpeas, then eaten with pasta or rice. You could also add peas or sweetcorn, if you have them.
  • Chopped tomatoes can be cooked with beans or other vegetables to make a pasta sauce.
  • You could also use soups as a base for sauces or meals e.g. chicken and mushroom soup for pies or chicken supreme, vegetable soup for casseroles or as a gravy.
  • Adding part of a tin of chickpeas, beans or lentils to a tin of tomato or vegetable soup makes a more filling meal.
  • Corned beef with potatoes can make a corned beef hash, which you can eat with baked beans or vegetables. You can also add things that you may have in your cupboards, fridge or freezer.
  • Boiled eggs are a source of protein and delicious in curry sauce with rice.
  • Tuna pasta bake can be topped with crushed crisps as a nice topping.
